A new compilation within the Hypnotised series, set for next week, presents a release divided into three special mixes, taking listeners on a journey through this iconic subgenre
If the Netherlands represent, though not exclusively, the cradle of trance and its many offshoots, Ibiza has always been its natural summer extension: the island of dreams, sunsets, and, of course, the music born from these very inspirations. In the 1990s, whether consciously or not, the fusion of chill-out sounds, capable of instantly evoking Mediterranean atmospheres, with a beat gave rise to a movement that would become one of the genre’s core pillars: balearic trance.
Arjan Rietveld, curator of the acclaimed Hypnotised: A Journey Through Trance Music compilation series, released between 2021 and 2025 on Black Hole Recordings, returns after exploring the evolution of trance across the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States, with a brand new project entirely dedicated to balearic trance: the compilation, set for release on May 8th, is divided into three distinct mixes.
The first, 1990s, brings together some of the greatest classics of the movement, and more broadly of 1990s trance, featuring iconic tracks such as Beachball by Nalin & Kane and Greece 2000 by Three Drives On A Vinyl, true symbols of the balearic sound.
The second mix, Indoor, moves into the early 2000s, introducing deeper and more hypnotic sounds. Among the featured tracks are Burned With Desire by Armin van Buuren and Justine Suissa, alongside Tales From The South by Jonas Steur and Under The Sun of Whirpool, in the remix by Solarstone.
Finally, Outdoor mix, pays tribute to the great trance classics through balearic reinterpretations and remixes. Fittingly, the mix opens with Café del Mar by Energy 52, released in 1993 and widely considered the symbolic starting point of the genre, here presented in the remix by Michael Woods. The selection also includes tracks such as Galaxia by Moonman, in the Eliot J remix, and Airwave by Rank 1, in its renowned Sunset Mix.
