In the early 2000s, Ashley Tomberlin was at the height of her career as a vocalist and co-producer, involved in numerous projects and lending her voice to some of the biggest trance hits of the era. In 2005, she joined Laurence Rapaccioli’s project Hidden Logic, helping to reshape it and ultimately turning it into Luminary. After two compelling releases, the project made its debut on Anjunabeats the following year, in 2006. It was on the iconic London-based label, founded by Above & Beyond in 2000, that they released what would become their biggest success: Amsterdam.
Amsterdam was an immediate success, but over the years the track would gain even greater recognition, establishing itself as one of the most iconic and instantly recognisable vocal trance productions ever made: much of this enduring legacy can probably also be attributed to its most famous version, the remix by Smith & Pledger, who perfectly enhanced the original’s captivating, ethereal atmosphere and unmistakably nostalgic melody while retaining a fast-paced and sophisticated trance sound.
In 2025, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Anjunabeats, fans were invited to vote for their favourite tracks from the catalogue of the legendary label: Oliver Smith and Mark Pledger’s remix was voted the second most-loved track in the label’s history, behind only Sun & Moon by Above & Beyond feat. Richard Bedford.
Over the years, several other remixes have been released, including reinterpretations by Maor Levi and Super8 & Tab, followed by the most recent version, a remix by Grum released in 2019.
