A strong windstorm temporarily halted the second night at The Gorge Amphitheatre, forcing the event into a two-hour pause pause before the celebrations resumed with Above & Beyond taking the stage for a set filled with new IDs, fresh collaborations with Justine Suissa, Richard Bedford and reworked Anjunabeats classics
Sometimes, you really have to keep your fingers crossed when fate seems to turn against you: that was certainly the case at ABGT700, whose most important day, Saturday, was marked not only by great music, as usual, but also by particularly challenging weather conditions.
A strong windstorm, caused by the passage of a cold front linked to a weather system coming from the Pacific Ocean, seriously threatened the conclusion of the second night of celebrations at The Gorge Amphitheatre.
Halfway through Oliver Smith’s set, which followed performances from Nourey, Darren Tate, Grum and Mat Zo, the event had to be temporarily suspended: the celebrations resumed around 120 minutes later, but with the schedule now considerably tighter and circumstances beyond the control of both artists and organisers, J Ribbon’s set inevitably had to be cancelled, at around 11:10 PM local time, the moment everyone had been waiting for finally arrived: Above & Beyond took to the stage.
It was yet another memorable event at the iconic Washington State venue, which has become the home of Above & Beyond’s legendary Group Therapy Weekender and is now considered a second home by both the trio and their fans. However, this was only the second ABGT celebration to be held at The Gorge, following ABGT250 in 2017.
Seeing Paavo, Jono and Tony back on stage at The Gorge therefore felt, in some ways, like travelling back in time. The trio opened their set with no fewer than four new instrumental IDs, immediately warming up a crowd that had just endured a lengthy weather-related interruption. After those first moments dedicated to new productions, they dropped Bigger Than All Of Us, the celebrated collaboration with Justine Suissa released last year, which also gave its name to their latest album.
The album was naturally one of the main focuses of the set, with Here Before, featuring Oliver Smith and Opposite The Other, Oliver Smith’s brilliant remix of Start A Fire with Richard Bedford, and a brand-new remix of Everywhere I Go all making appearances: Quicksand (Don’t Go) and Carry Me Home with Zoë Johnston two of last year’s most loved tracks, were instead played in their original versions, receiving huge reactions from the crowd, who sang along at the top of their voices.
But, of course, there was also great anticipation for new music. Among the most eagerly awaited IDs was the track currently known as (1000 Nights Like This), which has already featured in several of Above & Beyond’s most recent tour dates, alongside a new collaboration with Richard Bedford and, most notably, another beautiful new production featuring the iconic Justine Suissa.
New material from other Anjunabeats favourites was also featured throughout the set. Above & Beyond played new productions from Grum, Genix and Simon Gregory, bringing their distinctive sounds into the mix and once again highlighting the strong musical identity of the label.
There was also room for fresh reinterpretations of some of the most legendary tracks in Anjunabeats history. CVMRN, one of the label’s fastest-rising talents and increasingly prominent beyond the label itself, delivered a new version of My Enemy by Super8 & Tab feat. Julie Thompson, while a new remix of Helsinki Scorchin’, another iconic Super8 & Tab classic, also made its way into the set; italian duo Station To Station, meanwhile, put their own stamp on Every Moment, the recent collaboration between Max Graham & Second Sine feat. Eve Allie, delivering a bold remix that offers a fresh perspective on the track.
Further unreleased tracks and reworked productions were also featured throughout the set.
