What we are experiencing today may, in time, be remembered as a new golden era of electronic music. The highest tiers of the scene are increasingly rediscovering and embracing the roots of trance. This process is unfolding in many forms: from emerging talents reinterpreting the past through covers and old-school influences, to established figures returning to a more classic and authentic production style.
Within this context, one name stands out more than most in representing this vision: Superstrings. In truth, their philosophy predates the current resurgence: the five Dutch artists have built their journey around a key concept: nostalgia. Even before their studio productions, their greatest strength has always been their approach to live sets, defined by a carefully curated selection of old-style tracks, from timeless classics to rare gems from the history of trance.
This is one of the key factors behind their rapid rise, which has seen them perform at major international festivals in a short span of time. A defining moment came with their first mainstage appearance last year at the Ahoy Rotterdam during A State Of Trance: a powerful and emotional sunrise set that captivated nostalgic fans and marked a turning point in their career. It’s impossible not to highlight their explosive series of 12-hour non-stop events – true journeys through the history of trance – culminating just a few weeks ago in an epic marathon alongside legend Johan Gielen, Ruben de Ronde under his NRG2000 alias, and Eva Vrijdag.
On the discographic front, their breakthrough came with their signing to Armada Music and a series of impactful collaborations with true trance icons such as Ferry Corsten, Ben Gold, and Signum. Together, they delivered notable productions like Remember, Have Me (If You Want Me Too), The Whip, and What Ya Got 4 Me, further solidifying their artistic identity.
After three years of growth, however, one key element was still missing: a track entirely conceived by them. That moment now appears to have arrived: Neon Dusk Protocol has been circulating consistently for several weeks, although its premiere actually dates back to last October during the ADE special episode of A State Of Trance.
Since then, the track has been played across several key moments: from their set in Rotterdam this year, to episodes 1267 and 1270 of A State Of Trance, before gaining further recognition with support from Tiësto on his Prismatic show, and most recently during their live set at Ultra Music Festival Miami last weekend.
Neon Dusk Protocol is a direct, uncompromising production, capable of making an immediate impact and destined to gain approval from the genre’s purists. The track instantly transports the listener to another era, naturally evoking the most authentic trance atmospheres; its extended pads and melodic elements clearly recall the great anthems of the early 2000s, recreating the depth of sound that defined that era. The track’s structure reflects a clear and deliberate musical vision, perfectly aligned with Superstrings’ artistic identity.
It is a refined and cohesive production, consistent with their recent releases, and it carries all the elements needed to establish itself over the course of the year and likely beyond.
