Despite being affected by one of the most extreme heatwaves of recent decades, which forced organizers to implement some last-minute changes throughout the weekend, the festival once again demonstrated its success and enduring prestige, reaffirming its place as an unmissable gathering for trance fans from across the spectrum. And with an entire week of celebrations for Luminosity’s 20th anniversary in 2027 just announced, the future of this festival is shaping up to be even more spectacular
Although it has become increasingly difficult to keep track of the countless trance festivals and events taking place around the world today, Luminosity continues to embody, like no other, the purest spirit and essence of the genre.
In recent years, the spotlight has been focused primarily on the extraordinary depth of its line-up: an impressive number of artists representing the past, present and future of trance, often joined by true legends delivering unforgettable classic sets. Over time, this formula has become one of the festival’s defining characteristics, attracting an audience increasingly drawn to the nostalgia and heritage of the genre.
This year’s edition, however, arrived with another significant element: a genre that is experiencing a genuine resurgence, even beyond its traditional niche, as we have been reporting for months. As a result, all eyes were on the artists and the tracks they had prepared for the occasion.
Focusing on a single performance, honestly, would make little sense: Luminosity once again proved to be the ideal showcase for countless artists to premiere brand-new productions and unveil exciting new collaborations. Yet, beyond the music itself, what stood out the most was the feeling that, for four days, the entire global trance scene had relocated to Zandvoort. Social media reinforced that impression even further: artists, fans and industry figures were all there. It was almost impossible to find news coming from anywhere else, because everything that mattered that weekend was happening on the Dutch beaches.
The downside of this year’s edition was, unfortunately, the extraordinary heatwave that affected much of Central and Western Europe and continued throughout the festival weekend. During the hottest hours of the day, organizers were forced to implement exceptional measures, cancelling some performances and, on Friday, delaying the opening of the festival gates until 18:00 CET: it was an unavoidable decision, made necessary by the extreme temperatures and by the unique nature of a festival held entirely on a beachfront location. A far more drastic decision, however, was made for Defqon.1, as the renowned hardcore/hardstyle festival was unfortunately cancelled altogether due to the same extreme heatwave. A clear indication of just how severe the weather conditions had become across the Europe during last week.
On Saturday and Sunday, however, the music programme resumed as scheduled, while enhanced safety measures remained in place, including additional medical staff, more water distribution points and further precautions to ensure the well-being of both artists and festivalgoers. A decision that was widely understood and supported by both performers and fans.
Beyond all of this, what continues to make Luminosity truly unique is the genuine philosophy behind its organisation, year after year: no excessive technology, towering laser shows or spectacular LED productions; the goal remains to let people experience trance music in its purest form on the long beaches at sunset, fostering a natural and constant connection between artists and fans. It is a return “home” that renews itself every year, erases all distances and remains simply unmatched.
As if this year’s edition wasn’t enough, the organizers already have something even more ambitious in store for 2027: to celebrate Luminosity’s 20th anniversary, an entire week of festivities is being planned, promising what could become the most memorable edition in the festival’s history.
